  9.  AB    Stereotypic and stigmatic attitudes toward homosexuality may interfere
  10.        both directly and indirectly with the care provided to gay and lesbian
  11.        patients. The purpose of this study was to measure attitudes toward gays
  12.        and lesbians and assess homophobia among psychiatric nurses. The
  13.        demographic characteristics of education, religious identification, and
  14.        knowledge of gays and lesbians had positive affects on attitudes and
  15.        homophobia. The Attitudes Towards Gays and Lesbians Scale (ATGLS)
  16.        developed by the researcher specifically for this study assessed
  17.        cognitive attitudes and the Index of Homophobia (IHP), developed by
  18.        Hudson and Ricketts (1980), measured homophobia, the affective response
  19.        to gays and lesbians.
